Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement

20 September 2025 | 3 minutes

The Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) programme is an industry-led initiative designed to modernise how electricity usage is measured and settled across the market. By recording and settling energy use every half hour, MHHS will provide a more accurate and timely view of consumption.

What businesses need to know

Today, many electricity bills are still based on estimates or average use. That makes it harder to see exactly when and how energy is being used.

Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS) will change this. With MHHS, functioning smart and automated meter reading (AMR) meters will record electricity use in 30-minute intervals, giving a clearer picture of how energy is being used.

Ofgem confirmed the decision to introduce MHHS in April 2021. Their role is to make sure the programme delivers real benefits for customers and supports the UK’s progress towards net-zero.

The programme is being co-ordinated by Elexon, an independent body working with suppliers, networks and other partners to ensure everyone is ready for the transition.

Increased data insights provide better forecasting capabilities to track energy usage and enable suppliers to provide tailored solutions for your future energy needs.

Site-specific reconciliation using half-hourly data will support a faster and more accurate settlement process.

With MHHS, energy suppliers can offer time-of-use tariffs. This will help you shift usage to when renewable energy is available, supporting the journey to net-zero.
